What Is Snoop Catcher?

Snoop Catcher is a special utility script that is placed into your non-attended folders on your host account to protect them against prying eyes. Hackers and snoopers can guess at common directory names and, if successful, can view the entire contents of that directory. This can result in stolen files, images, etc. as well as providing hackers with a means to infiltrate your site.

Snoop Catcher is placed into each folder that does not have an index file (if the folder contains an index.php, .htm, .html or .shtml file then they can not view the contents). This is a placeholder that prohibits the visitor from viewing the contents. But, it also does the following:

 

• Logs their IP address
• Logs the time they attempted to access
• Logs the directory they tried to access
• Stores this data in a MySQL database
• Displays the data in a password protect admin area
• Can create a zipped CSV file of the data for downloading
• Can erase all the data so you can start fresh
• After displaying the Unauthorized Access page to the visitor it will automatically redirect them to the page of your choice

The idea is to view the number of attempts by any one particular IP address. If they are consistently trying to hit your folders then you have a pretty good idea that they are snoopers. Then you can elect to ban their IP using one of the many available banning methods offered by your host.

• MySQL table creation script (must have existing MySQL database or ability to create one
• An index.php script that you place in each unprotected folder
• A password protected admin area
• One config.php file where you set the variables for your MySQL database and passwords
• An instruction file detailing the installation instructions
